...That's a new one. Hard to believe it works but I'm going to try it :)

I recommend a slightly stiff brush (try a few to see what works best with your paper, though soft brushes probably won't be effective). I find brushes far better than cotton or blending sticks to create smooth tones, however I occasionally use both cotton and blending stick as well.
